Skald

Skald is a Maltese band founded in 2017. The band’s music genre may be loosely termed as “contemporary folk” with the line-up comprising of  vocals, percussion, acoustic and classical guitars, violin and bass.

Skald initially started off as a one-project ensemble having been assigned to compose original music inspired by works of national poet Dun Karm Psaila as part of a commemoration event held at San Anton Presidential Garden.

Soon after this event the band was approached by Festivals Malta to embark on a 3-year project with the aim to produce and perform contemporary music inspired by traditional folk music. The project included annual participation in the Ghanafest festival 2018,2019 and 2020 virtual festival and the production and recording of a studio album. Whilst the album was originally intended to be launched as part of the third-year performance of this festival, this had to be postponed for 2021 due to Covid-19 pandemic with the work finally  launched recently (in June 2021) with the support of Festivals Malta at Pjazza Teatru Rjal.

The collaboration with Festivals Malta also included the production of three live session videos published online in the run-up to the album launch. Promotion of the album ‘Kura’ also included numerous radio / television

interviews as well as performances including guest performance at Malta Arts Awards (2021) and guest performance on Serataron (2021). Notwithstanding the fact that the band’s music genre and inspirations of the first album, the album’s title track Kura, ranked among the PRS Top 10 Malta charts for 14 consecutive weeks.

Throughout the past four years, the band also had the opportunity to perform  in a number of other events such as Notte Bianca (2018 & 2019 on main stage), Note Folk (2018), the Malta International Folk Festival (2018), private concerts for a select audience (2019 & 2020), composition and live music performance for a theatrical production (2019), Hybrid festival (2020), Skaldatura, an online concert organised in conjunction with Trevor Zahra recorded at the Manoel Theatre (launched online and presently being aired on television), Backdoor jam online sessions (2021).
