More music, more at the Roots Stage

Earth Garden has grown to be the biggest festival on the island, but as already announced we are taking the Festival to an international level. And what better way to do that than increase the number of foreign artists. The Roots Stage, the heart of our festival will be hosting, mostly international acts and we are super excited to announce some of the artists for this year’s lineup. This stage will keep the same set-up of last year. We are very happy with the design revamp given to this area in the last edition of Earth Garden as well as the upgrade to a 22m stage. We are giving you more days, more music, more fun.

Our artists hail from different parts of the world, namely; France, Germany, UK, Israel, Spain, South America, Australia, bringing not only various styles of music but also a fusion of different cultures coming together in one common language; music.

The first act that we would like to introduce is Al Jawala. Founded in the year 2000, this French-German band has gone through some astonishing paths. They were amongst the first artists to mix wild oriental brass with clubby beats and hip-hop. They call their style Balkan Big Beats and they have been described as Fat Boy Slim meets folklore! Al Jawala deliver a unique mixture of party and concert experience, sometimes urban and club orientated, sometimes mysterious and dark with a big load of Rock ́n ́Roll attitude. We’re positive you will absolutely dance to their loud and passionate music during their performance on the Roots Stage.

Afriquoi will be another band that will be playing at the Roots Stage bringing an uplifting fusion of African music and live electronics. This band is an underground sensation, a masterful 5-piece live show combing Gambian kora, Congolese guitar and Mandinka percussion styles with electronic music drawing on house, soca, hip-hop, soul and jungle to create something entirely unique. They are a true fusion music band, bringing together a vast depth of musical knowledge, culture and life experience. Their afro house classic ‘Kudaushe’ has become an established favourite in clubs all over the world. They have toured all over Europe on major stages, just to mention a few; Glastonbury, Boomtown, Secret Garden Party and the London 2012 Olympics.

Another band that we proudly present to you is Nubiyan Twist. This Leeds born, London based musical collective, orchestrated by guitarist and producer Tom Excell, create a unique, infectious sound in an eclectic mix of styles, drawing on jazz, hip-hop, afrobeat, Latin, soul, reggae and dance music. With an epic 10 piece live show featuring a 4 piece horn section, 2 vocalists, electronics and an international rhythm section, Nubiyan Twist create a powerful and unforgettable experience. Since their humble beginnings at Leeds College of Music, the band have performed on huge stages across the world, being chosen by David Byrne to perform at Queen Elizabeth Hall for the South Bank’s Meltdown Festival, selling out London’s iconic Jazz Cafe, and rocking festival stages from Fusion to Wilderness, Boomtown to Edinburgh Jazz Festival, with their powerful sound and unique blend of styles.

We did not think about just about more artists but also about bringing about some great music styles to our Roots Stage. The diverse variety of music styles and artists will surely be captivating.

We will have acoustic sets as well as solo acts. The dynamic duo Lyons and La Zel will incorporate flute beatboxing, harmonica beatboxing and crowd interactive, captivating freestyle rap during their performance. Another acoustic set will come from guitarist Geordie Little who has developed a reputation for his innovative style and compositions, and has performed at events such as Glastonbury Festival. Oded Kafri or KAFRi is a rising star on the alternative music scene, bringing a new definition to the drums and drumming with his ecstatic showmanship.

Some Jazz influences will also be part of our Roots Stage vibe. These will be coming from the band hailing from France Balaphonics, and from author, composer, percussionist, singer and self-taught trumpeter Edmony Krater.

Forged from the streets of London, Rum Buffalo will give a performance of unique blend of intertwined melodies between violin, saxophone, trombone and voice, characterises their individual timbre. Based in the Island of Malta, Pon Di Corner is an International collaboration of MCs. They are currently preparing the launch of their first album called “One World” to be released in April 2017. Solo reggae singer from Tarragona Baino di Lion will present his new work in early 2017. We cannot wait to hear these artists to perform their swing, hip-hop and reggae rhythms.

We have added also some great local artists to the Roots Stage line-up including Cygna that can be identified as the creator of organic atmospheres warming spaces with lit sound journeys; all such magnitudes are produced by Mario Sammut in Malta. The band Plato’s Dream Machine from whom we are excited to hear their performance happening shortly after their second album launch. Another addition is the high-powered, colourful, contemporary sound of uncouth and unsophisticated contemporary trio, The Ranch. Surely give nothing less during their performance on our Roots Stage! Two other local acts are joining our list of artists. The band Falcon’s Flying Circus who recently completed recording an album composed of original material written throughout the years that evolved from many different influences and various genres including blues, psychedelic and progressive rock. The other act is surely a new initiative for the islands that of bringing the culture of the 30s, of gypsy jazz musicians coming together. Having violinist George Curmi Puse, accordionist Yuri Charyguine, guitarists Joshua Bray and Steve Delia “id-Delli” and bassist Anthony Saliba to form the Hot Club of Valletta.

Finally, the much awaited Tribali experience, that culminates in all its worth during the band’s performances, with an array of movement, colour and dynamic sounds, will be back on the Roots Stage for this edition of Earth Garden.

This band needs no introduction with our festival goers and we are always pleased to have them on our stage. Indeed, we will surely see a crowd from all walks of life and of all ages relating with this band during their concert at the Roots Stage. This band’s way of interacting with our audience, will surely make them feel this live experience communication with Tribali. We are looking forward for another unforgettable performance, full of positive energy.
